Our Main Goal For 2019

It’s a new year and I’m sure everyone has planned their new year goals perfectly. I know I have. I have set out to accomplish more than I did in 2018 that’s for sure. This year is going to be full of intentionality. I’m praying for more courage and a lot of help. Which brings me to my point of this post. The one thing that will make all other things fall perfectly where they may.

I’m sure this isn’t something we haven’t thought of, in fact, I’m sure it’s somewhere on our list of things to achieve in 2019. The thing is, though writing out our goals and resolutions is great, the one thing that can make anything possible is the one thing that needs to remain number one on all our lists, our relationship with Jesus.

I know, duh right?
Truth is, I know just how easy it is to get completely lost in our day-to-day lives that we lose focus. We come in strong with so much passion and fire to do what is good and we seem so hopeful and ready to take on whatever. That is, until “whatever” actually shows up.
It’s like when Peter wanted to walk on water to Jesus. His passion got him off the boat but it didn’t take long for him to start focusing more on his surroundings than on Jesus before he started to sink.
The thing about losing our focus is that it doesn’t always happen all at once. It’s a disappointment here, an offense there, a misunderstanding here, an epic embarrassment there, and before you know it, BOOM, where’s Jesus?!

Sometimes I feel like I get so caught up in getting it all perfect, or being the one who needs to do it all or being the one who needs to have all the answers, or I just start to focus more on what didn’t work that I get lost in what should’ve been.

I start to lose sight of what truly matters… progress.

“It doesn’t matter how fast you get there, it only matters that you’re still trying to get there.”

So, I’ve made it my personal mission to put Jesus first.
I still have my list of goals, beautifully decorated and inspiring me already. However, if I don’t make it my business to dedicate everything I do, all I want to become, everything I have planned, to the one who makes all things possible, to the one whom I can draw my strength from directly, then it’s all for nothing.

We weren’t put here to work endlessly till we die, or to make tons of money, or to even be famous. We were put here to experience the Love of God and to share that Love and Good News to all those who are willing to listen. This life is so short and eternity is something we cannot even conceptualize but it’s there and it’s happening. “Nearly two people die every second.”* That’s a lot of souls lost to eternal torment if they died without Christ in their lives.

So what does putting Jesus at the top of your “new year, new goals” list do? It reminds us that we are here by His grace alone and we owe our lives to His goodness, so let everything you do be for the Lord. (Psalms 37:5)

I hope you feel encouraged to create a goals list, if you haven’t already, and think of ways you can inspire others to ask you about Jesus. Think of skills/talents you believe the Lord can use in you to reach out to others in the world. We are here to love and encourage one another, let’s do more of that with Jesus as our main source of energy and strength this year.
